CURRICULUM DAY – NOVEMBER 28
Just a reminder that
Tuesday November 28 will be a Curriculum Day where teachers will be
investigating a number of schools and how they effectively implement new
initiatives into their programs to provide high quality educational outcomes
for our students. If you require the services of OSHClub please contact them
asap as they will operate if a minimum number of families enroll.
UNIFORM POLICY REVIEW
As part of the Mentone Park PS Policy Review
Program, school council are currently looking at the Uniform Policy and we
would like your feedback regarding what this will look like for the next 3
years. Whilst we are currently still governed by the previous policy which
requires black shoes or predominantly black sports shoes to be worn, I would
like our community to provide feedback regarding this issue.
The information gathered from the options
below will be used to formulate the new policy, which will then be circulated
to parents this year. The new policy will then take effect from the beginning
of 2018. Please note this survey is about the issue of school shoes only.
Community consultation on the entire policy will occur once the draft is
complete.
STOMP
Today
was day 1 of our 5 week performance and dance activities. When I visited some
of the junior classes they were dancing and singing and having a wonderfully
engaging lesson. I look forward to seeing all of the classes over the coming
weeks.
DENTAL VAN
Don’t
forget that next week we will have the dental van on site for those families
who have returned their forms. More details will follow.
READING
TO YOUR CHILDREN
I think
every parent knows the value of reading books to young children. However, I was interested in an Age article
last year: “Reading together still important after children start school, expert
says”. Professor Bridie Raban, at the University of Melbourne's
Graduate School of Education makes the point that many parents stop reading to
their children after they reach school age, and this is a lost opportunity to
continue to develop their literacy skills
“Research identifies a clear link between the development of good literacy and numeracy skills at an early age and higher levels of educational achievement, employability, higher earnings and social participation later in life,” she said.

Despite the bells and whistles of
digital books, 86 per cent of Australian children preferred a traditional book.

Reading tips

Make reading part of the daily routine. Make a bedtime story something
to look forward to.

Read regularly yourself.

Join a local library.
4.
Read books on different topics and find themes that interest your
kids.
5.
Play word and word association games.
6.
Talk with your child: it builds communication skills, vocabulary
and increases confidence.

Dear Parents & Guardians,
Please note all signed permission forms and any payment must be given directly to your child/ren’s teachers. This allows the teachers to check and mark off each child’s permission form and payment.
Following are our upcoming incursions and excursions
- STOMP Performing Arts 5 week program commences November 16, payment of $18 by November 13
- Middle School Taskworks Excursion November 27, payment of $26 by November 20
- Senior School Taskworks Excursion December 6, payment of $26 by November 29
Qkr payments
Please check with the office if you are uncertain whether you have paid for STOMP or Taskworks excursions. We have had a number of families who have paid twice for some excursions. Please phone if you are unsure, we are happy to check for you.
2018 School Fee and Bookpack Information
On Wednesday November 8, 2018 School fee and bookpack information was sent home to families. To confirm your book pack order, please complete the payment summary sheet, selecting your payment option and return to the school office by Friday December 8. Thank you to the families who have already paid, please return your payment summary sheet if you haven't done so.
To check if your payment has gone through successfully follow the steps below to view your receipts.
SPARE CLOTHING
Please ensure that you pack extra underwear and clothing for your child/ren. Due to OHS guidelines, we are no longer allowed to provide underwear.
Please feel free to phone or come into the office if you have any questions.
We are more than happy to assist with showing you how to use Qkr and Flexibuzz.
LOST PROPERTY
We have a large amount of lost property at the moment including lunch containers, drink bottles, jackets and jumpers. Please check the classroom next to Performing Arts for any lost property.

Every year we collect gifts at Christmas for families and children. We are now collecting new toys for the children and food items for families.
(Dixon House has requested no soft toys and please check food items are in date)

SCHOOL BANKING
SCHOOL UNIFORM
All parents/guardians, visitors & volunteers to the school MUST sign in & out of the school and display their WWCC in a lanyard, which is available at the school office.
The Department of Education requires any person involved in an activity where children may be present to have a current WWCC or have supplied proof that they have applied for a WWCC with the Department of Justice. All schools are required to comply with the Working with Children Act 2005.
Volunteers are expected to carry the WWCC card on their person at all times when working or volunteering at the school or during school related activities.
